Walking for Walter
This year my family and I will be hosting the very first Walter F. Burnett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship 5k Run/Walk Fundraiser. The event will take place at William Land Park, 3800 South Land Park Drive, Sacramento, CA on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 9:00am. Registration is $15 and T-Shirts are $10.
The Walter F. Burnett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of my late husband, Walter, who went home to be with the Lord on January 6, 2009. Walter spent the final two years of his life confined to a wheel chair with both legs amputated below the knee. But, his wonderful spirit and love for Jesus Christ could not be confined. This scholarship helps high school seniors and current college students from single parent, grandparent and foster parent households and we have been blessed to award scholarships to some very special youth at our home church, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, each year since 2009. Sending children to college today can seem like an unattainable dream, especially for families who have special circumstances. Having been a single parent myself for many years I know how discouraging this can be. But, I have learned first-hand that with Jesus Christ all things are possible.
After Walter lost his legs to vascular disease he often asked me to stand up for him when the choir sang. And on Saturday, July 11th, you can do the same! If you are age 5 years old and above and can walk or even run, you can participate. The distance of a 5K is 3.2 miles. My family and I will be walking to honor the memory of Walter, his courage and his irrepressible spirit, but I know that many of you never knew Walter, so more importantly; we will be walking for the children who have a desire to attain a higher education. Pledge forms are available on our website for those that would like to raise money for scholarships on our behalf but may not be able to participate in the event. We truly appreciate your support.
The deadline to register for the 5K is Friday, June 26, 2015. The Deadline to order a T-Shirt is Friday, June 5, 2015. We are also accepting applications for the 2015 Scholarship. Deadline to apply for the Scholarship is Sunday, May 17, 2015.
